Batey Relief Alliance delivers emergency aid to thousands affected by hurricane Isaac in DR 28 August, 2012

MONTE PLATA, Dominican Republic, August 28, 2012. – After days of unrelenting rain and heavy flooding, the devastation from Hurricane Isaac left behind 11 deaths, hundreds of homes severely affected and more than 100 communities under water. Bridges were also collapsed, crops destroyed and more than 25,000 people displaced without electricity.

The province of Monte Plata, where BRA develops most of its social programs in impoverished rural and sugarcane “batey” areas, is also affected. The Senatorial Office of Charlie Mariotti has requested the support of the Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) in a collaborative effort to bring relief to thousands of victims.

BRA will distribute two 40-foot containers (37.52 metric tons) of dehydrated food products donated by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). A total of 1.9 million rations will be distributed to 12,000 people who are vulnerable and impoverished, including pregnant women, children, the elderly and people living with HIV/AIDS. BRA will also distribute medical supplies and essential medicines donated by Direct Relief International (DRI). Other donations will include clorox to purify the water against Cholera, sandals, etc.
