PHILADELPHIA PREPARES BENEFIT CONCERT FOR BRA’S FLOOD RELIEF EFFORTS

PHILADELPHIA PREPARES BENEFIT CONCERT FOR BRA’S FLOOD RELIEF EFFORTS 25 July, 2004

New York, USA ? Members of several prestigious symphony orchestras around the country are coming together to Philadelphia on July 25th, 2004 to give a benefit concert supporting the Batey Relief Alliance?s flood relief efforts in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. ?This is such a great honor for the Batey Relief Alliance to be part of this incredible event,? said Ulrick Gaillard, Executive Director of the BRA.

The benefit concert entitled ?Bringing Help and Hope to the People of Haiti? is being organized by the Philadelphia-based Academy of Community Music event committee ?The Circle of Friends of Haiti?. ?Hundreds of calls have been made to secure the participation of musicians from the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra?s retired personnel manager, William Moyer, and conductors from music schools at the Minnesota University and Eastern University in Philadelphia,? said Ellen Fisher and Robert dePasquale, Founders of the Academy of Community Music.

This event was prompted as Hispaniola, the Caribbean island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, was hard hit last month with a devastating flood disaster. The unfortunate circumstance provoked a humanitarian crisis of enormous proportion. Entire villages were destroyed, leaving more than 3,000 people dead and countless others sick, hungry and destitute. Natural disaster experts warn of the possibility for famine and epidemic outbreaks if urgent assistance in medical care, food and medicines is not provided.

?The situation has galvanized people from around the country, including church leaders, entrepreneurs, artists and musicians, uniting them in a collaborative effort to raise money for the victims of this tragedy,? added Mr. Moyer.

The benefit concert will be held on Sunday July 25th, 2004 at 6:30 PM. The location is at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, 406 N. Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA, 19090.

?Contributions will help ship, ground transport and distribute food, clothes and medicines to the affected populations; assess long-term health care needs; organize medical missions to provide emergency medical assistance; and help rebuild disaster areas to address long-term health and education needs,? said Ellie dePasquale, committee advisor and assistant concert Master of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra.
