durante la gestación y en la infancia
desempeña un papel fundamental en la
determinación de la salud a lo largo de
toda la vida (1). A pesar de las
consecuencias significativas que tiene
para la salud, el bienestar y el desarrollo
social y económico, la malnutrición
materna e infantil sigue siendo un
problema crítico de salud pública a nivel
mundial, especialmente en países de
ingresos bajos y medianos (2). La
República Dominicana no escapa a esta
realidad. A pesar del crecimiento
económico experimentado por el país en
las últimas décadas y los esfuerzos
realizados para abordar este problema
mediante intervenciones nutricionales,
las tasas de desnutrición en niños
menores de cinco años no han mostrado
cambios significativos en las últimas dos
décadas (3,4). Además, se observa un
aumento constante en el sobrepeso y la
obesidad, tanto en la población infantil
como en las mujeres en edad
reproductiva (3,4)
